About 35 minutes west, Rochester offers a full day's worth of options without much planning required. The Strong National Museum of Play is a hit for families year-round. The Public Market hosts one of the country's largest outdoor markets on Saturday mornings. East Avenue runs from downtown to the George Eastman Museum and is lined with independent restaurants, bars, and shops. Highland Park and the lakeside trails along Lake Ontario are definitely worth the stop for anyone who wants to get outside the city grid.
Finger Lakes, NY
About 30 miles south, the Finger Lakes carry the title of one of New York's premier wine regions and back it up with more than 100 wineries across Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka Lakes. Beyond the wineries, the original draw is still there — the boat tours run on Seneca Lake give you a close look at the deep glacial waters that put this stretch of the state on the map in the first place. Watkins Glen State Park's gorge trail has run continuously since the 1860s.
Sodus Bay, NY
Sodus Bay is a small Wayne County harbor town about twenty-five minutes from camp. It's best known for the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum and the annual fishing tournaments held each summer on Lake Ontario, drawing competitors from across the state. Day-to-day, it's a practical stop for groceries, fuel, and a sit-down meal before heading back to the campground. Chimney Bluffs State Park nearby is worth a look if you're passing through with an eye for dramatic shoreline.
